Introducing MCAN Mental Health Consumer Action Network

Who we are at a glance:

We are Alaskans. There are approximately 106,000 of us in the state.  We are men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes, races and religion, with something special in common; we all face mental health issues on a regular, sometimes, daily basis. Some of us are diagnosed. Some of us are in treatment and under medication.

What have we done so far?

Beginning in the summer of 2016, we can together to begin organizing. That’s the American way. We formed MCAN, the Mental Health Consumer Action Network here in Juneau. We registered as a nonprofit organization, so that we could join together with other mental health consumers in a membership-supported and membership-run grassroots organization. We formed a board to engage policy makers and stakeholders and have begun to reach out to mental health consumers throughout the city. We’re reviewing existing programs and surveying capacity.

What’s next for MCAN?

Without a strong, well-organized base of consumers, we will continue to be voices crying alone in the wilderness, so first we will build our membership. We already are hearing many issues from many of them. Discrimination in housing and employment is high on the list, coupled with the need for more jobs and housing as well. More facilities, both intermediate and skilled, are needed to meet our health needs so that we can be stable and productive members of the community. We are working to create a resource network so that we can be self/peer advocate and navigate through the web of available services and express a voice when a service is lacking.

What can you do?

We are in start-up mode, so your generous contribution will go towards the above mentioned goals and immediately provide for office space, member meeting logistics, web design services, advocacy tools and other general non-profit infrastructure needs.

We can’t do it alone – We need your support!
